Otafest has approximately 150 volunteer staff responsible for planning the festival year-round. The staff plan every aspect of the festival and its smaller events throughout the year. It’s a big commitment, but those who rise to the challenge will find that it’s a fun and rewarding place to be. Your Otafamily awaits!

Line Control Area Lead

The Line Control Area Lead manages a group of volunteers and is responsible for maintaining orderliness in Otafest’s festival areas. This includes creating/leading lines when needed and managing lines at the event that seem unsafe or need more containment or direction. This position pertains to main events, big panels, autographs, or any activities hosted at Otafest that are deemed large enough for a line control staff member. They may work closely with Emergency Management in times where additional help is needed or if a medical, fire, or police related incident is taking place. Reports to the Line Control Coordinator.

REQUIREMENTS

  • As a day of staff member, this position requires availability throughout the duration of the festival, as well as any necessary pre-festival preparation (i.e. attendance of specific meetings, training, etc.),
  • Professionalism is a non-negotiable requirement.
  • Strong organizational skills,
  • Ability to be on your feet all day,
  • Ability to handle high stress situations and troubleshoot problems.
  • Previous managerial or leadership skills recommended.

Policy Enforcement Staff

Policy Enforcement Staff are responsible for taking the appropriate actions necessary to ensure patron compliance to Otafest’s official festival policies. Staff will have a detailed knowledge of the official festival policies, including the standardized set of responses to policy violation. Tasks may include inspecting props in order to ensure compliance with the official Otafest prop policy, enhancing patron safety, and experience through the identification and rectification of policy violations, etc. They are expected to have exceptional customer service skills and must be able to troubleshoot issues and respond appropriately.

REQUIREMENTS

  • As a day of staff member, this position requires availability throughout the duration of the festival, as well as any necessary pre-festival preparation (i.e. attendance of specific meetings, training, etc.),
  • Ability to handle most questions related to Otafest policies,
  • Troubleshooting and quick thinking skills, and
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Professionalism is a non-negotiable requirement.

Social Media Coordinator

Working with the Digital Marketing & Campaigns Manager, the Social Media Coordinator helps develop, implement and execute social media strategy. Announcements online to the public would typically be done by this person as per direction from the Digital Marketing and Campaigns manager. As such, this staff member may also be answering questions from patrons where applicable. They may also work with key departments such as People Services in terms of external hiring for potential staff positions that are open needing to be filled. The role is also expected to enforce social media policies. The Social Media coordinator role requires a flexible schedule and ability to professionally respond to requests for information. The Social Media Coordinator may also work with other departments on establishing and maintaining social media policies for staff.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to attend monthly meetings is preferred (either virtually or in person),
  • Excellent knowledge and experience with Facebook and Twitter is required,
  • Experience with and access to Adobe InDesign a strong asset,
  • Experience with Instagram, Reddit, Snapchat and Pinterest, as well as online community management or advocacy programs are an asset,
  • Proven written communication skills,
  • Ability to meet and maintain a communications schedule is required,
  • As a member of planning staff, this position requires the availability and ability to plan and execute tasks individually and collaboratively, both within assigned departments and cross-departmentally, prior to the festival, in a timely manner.
